Perky Pigeon Eater

Perky Pigeon Eater was a star.  He could rid the entire town of its unwanted pigeon population. It was a smart job and he loved the attention.  Perky one day set out to eat twelve pigeons.  It was going to be a record.  He would clean up the towns parks and playgrounds so much more quickly.  So Perky gathered twelve pigeons and he sat down as soon as they were prepared for his tasting.  I believe Perky was very wise indeed for a cleaner park meant that there would be more children and more friends to stop by and say hello to Perky as he gathered some more of his pigeons for his next meal.  It was a foolproof plan.  But what Perky did not realize is that his watch was set at 8:30 in the morning but that in fact it was 3:30 in the afternoon.  Perky arrived at the park too late and it was almost midnight when he went to gather his pigeons.  The problem was that perky did not notice the light of the sun in making his decisions in his day.  He just checked his watch.  So when Perky got to the park, the pigeons were all sleeping and in trees.   Perky could not get to them at all.  It would not seem a big deal as Perky would realize his error, fix his watch and go about the same routine the following afternoon when he was accustomed to gathering pigeons for his dinner meal.  But the problem is that Perky was missing thirty teeth.  Perky was unable to chew his food and he was unable to enjoy his meal as much as he could not carve the pigeons into small piece to swallow.  Perky had to have his meal chewed by his dog first and that meant that Perky would have to pull the meal out of his dogs mouth before Perky could insert it in his own.  So why is this any factor?  Because when Perky got home, his dog was no longer willing to wait for his meal and broke free and left his premises and ran out and was hit by a car.  Perky took many months to teach his dog the trick of eating the meal without swallowing and now Perky could no longer eat his meal after it was chewed up by his faithful dog.   I must say that I felt sorry for Perky because Perky was really a bright star... he provided a very important public service and he was paid very well.  But since he could no longer eat the pigeons, Perky was transfixed by the fact that he had grown gaunt and that now he could no longer catch them either.   The park grew filled with pigeons and people were leaving the park never to come back because the pigeons had completely taken over the park benches and the walkways.  Perky no longer had any friends who said hello and the children on the playground were no longer coming to smile at him as he gathered pigeons and prepared his meals.
The theme of this commentary is that if you are able to learn about the life around you and apply it to make yourself better, you are going to win in life.  But the minute you forget that the world is your caretaker and you begin to rely on external devices that are unreliable at times, you are going to end up like Perky Pigeon Eater and be without a meal and be without a friend.   Its not easy doing your job and that is true, but to miss the most obvious of all time pieces is the event that will be your undoing.
